Alex Hill and Whispers at White Oak Inn: Can She Rub Elbows with HeR's Nancy Drew?

Image
Screenshot of digital game cover from Alex Hill Mystery As a seasoned Nancy Drew gamer, I was excited to hear that various people were making games based on HeR Interactive's Nancy Drew mystery series . Already, we had Miss Clue , but that series had its bugs and other issues that made gameplay unpleasant and/or impossible. Alex Hill: Whispers at White Oak Inn by hannahontrek is a slower, low-pressure mystery rife with Nancy Drew references and high stakes.  The Concilio Detective Agency is asked by Ronnie Bahir, a 25-year-old concierge at White Oak Inn, to investigate the threats he's been receiving and if the inn's hauntings are connected since they started up only a few months ago. The case is given to Alex Hill who is back from suspension. On the car ride there, she witnesses a ghostly, glowing figure walking across the lake near the inn, so already, the game is a foot! When Alex checks in with Ronnie, she learns that a girl named Audrey died in a boating accident ...

Endless Monday Visual Novel: A Commentary on AI and Corporations

Image
Screenshot of Endless Monday Main Menu by hcnone Endless Monday: Dreams and Deadlines and Overtime allows players to navigate as Penny, an office worker in the Creative department who has a bad habit of procrastinating her projects. After playing Endless Monday , I see it as a satirical, meta, and...

Well, I played Midnight in Salem , the 33 rd Nancy Drew game, and it was a new game, but not a Nancy Drew game. Why? Because HeR Interactive tore out the soul of what made the adventure games so special. That isn’t to say that the game doesn’t have improvements or good qualities. It does. But it is no longer what it used to be or could have been. I am a dedicated Nancy Drew fan and cling to the original Nancy Drew yellow hardcover books. I have been playing Nancy Drew games since 2004, and I have played games 1-29 over and over again, saving the last three since they contain the magic that drew me to the series.  The Pros Environment This aspect of the game is, without a doubt, the number-one improvement in the series. There is no argument. The natural areas, like the surrounding property of Moosham Castle and the Hathorne House fores...
