Why Have a Redhead as Your Heroine?

Image
Photo by Bianca Berg on Unsplash The idea for this post came to me when I finished reading Valkyrie by Kate O'Hearn. The protagonist was born with flaxen hair, but later dyes it red. Once I had finished the book and was starting on its review, I received in the mail Book 3 of The Warrior Isles series by R. L. McIntyre, which is another series with a natural redheaded heroine. Then, I remembered that Nancy Drew is a famous red-haired heroine (usually). My heroine of Book 1 of a series I've been working on for years is also redheaded. I wondered, why are so many heroines redheaded? What's the appeal?  Disclaimer : It's important to remember that these are fictional characters we will be looking at and fiction has stereotypes. Real people with red hair are the same as everyone else; some may have hot tempers while others won't, for example. Everyone has their own set of dominants traits and people should not be judged by their hair color.  Asuka Langley action fig...

The Retelling of Fairy Tales: Snow White, The Little Mermaid and OisĂn

Some of my books on fairy tales and myths  I've always loved "Spot the Difference," "I Spy," and word searches. The thrill of the hunt and the euphoria of the discovery make it so exciting! "The game is afoot," as Holmes says. And this love of mine carries over to books. I enjoy comparing and contrasting stories to see all the different paths one story could take, whether it's canon or headcanon. It can tell you something about the times it was told in and provide insight into the author's views and opinions. Whether consciously or unconsciously, authors put pieces of themselves into their stories.  For example, John Green's novel Looking for Alaska is heavily based on Green's experience (they say "Write what you know" after all); he even based the setting on his high school and its notable hangouts. As authors go, Green's narrative style matches his way of speaking, which you'll notice when viewing his vlogbrothers ...

Canadian Short Stories: Alistair MacLeod's "As Birds Bring Forth the Sun"

Image
I dug out my brick of a Canadian Literature Anthology from university and picked a few short stories that I could talk about. The book has many of the greats, including Margaret Atwood, Susanna Moodie and Leonard Cohen, to name a few. The book has a total of 1,290 pages, so there are tons more of excellent writers to read about. This anthology contains a page or two on each writer and has poems and short stories, as well as narratives from people during the time of Canada's exploration. Side Note about "Eskimo:" A Derogatory Word I remember that one of the stories, a narrative, was about a British man living amongst a tribe in Canada and the tribe referred to a second tribe as "Eskimo," or "Esquimaux" as it was originally spelt in the narrative. It means "eaters of raw meat" and was used because it was believed that they were savages . It was a barbaric term that has remained attributed to natives of the upper part of Canada and Alaska . Swarms ASMR is hosting this magical collab, so head over to her channel and check out her other videos! The video description includes a list of several other talented ASMRtists, so be sure to check them out, too! The idea for this video started with my posting Johanna Polle's (more on her below) Instagram post of  Nemetona  on a Discord channel that has various ASMRtists. An online friend suggested that JessKCreative do a roleplay as Nemetona and then, the idea snowballed from there with a bunch of ASMRtists getting in on the action. Et voilĂ , this collab was born!  Celtic Goddesses BE FOREWARNED: The story behind goddesses, especially Celtic ones, is a tangled web with conflicting information and similarities since Christianity changed the Pagan information, gods and goddesses evolved and different cultures share similar information, (i.e., Ireland versus Scotland). Note: The goddesses mentioned below may appear in the video above. These amazing Goddess prints are des...
